Ceiling Fan Installation in Albuquerque, NM

Ceiling fans earn their keep in Albuquerque. Summers regularly push into the nineties, and plenty of homes here still cool with evaporative coolers rather than refrigerated air, which work best when air keeps moving through the house. A fan in each bedroom helps a swamp cooler spread its cool, damp air and lets you run it on low on milder days. Flat-roofed Pueblo-style homes can heat up fast under the summer sun, and rooms with tall ceilings or clerestory windows trap warm air at the top. In winter, a fan on low and reversed nudges that warm air back down to where people actually sit, which is a real help in homes with high ceilings and wood stoves or kiva fireplaces.

We install new fans where there's never been one, replace old fans and swap out light fixtures for fans. The key is a properly rated electrical box solidly attached to the framing, since a fan is a heavy, moving load. Our licensed electricians make every connection and add or replace boxes, wall controls and wiring as needed. We set the right downrod length for your ceiling height, assemble and balance the blades so they don't wobble, and test every speed and the light kit. We also install outdoor fans on covered patios and portales with fixtures rated for damp locations.

What this covers

  • New fan installation where there was no fixture
  • Replacing light fixtures with fans
  • Fan-rated electrical boxes and braces
  • Vaulted, sloped and viga ceiling installs
  • Outdoor portal and patio fans
  • Wall controls, remotes and smart fan switches
  • Downrod sizing and blade balancing
  • Removal and disposal of old fans
A note from around here: Older Pueblo Revival homes in Nob Hill and the University area often have shallow boxes and plaster ceilings that need careful work, while homes with vigas and latillas in Corrales, Los Ranchos and the foothills need creative mounting, and newer Westside homes with vaulted great rooms need long downrods and angle mounts.

How a ceiling fan installation visit usually goes

Check the Box and Wiring

We look at the existing box, wiring and ceiling to decide whether it can carry a fan or needs a new rated box and brace.

Prepare the Mount

We install or replace the box and secure it to the framing, beams or a brace, and plan the downrod length for your ceiling height.

Hang and Connect

The fan is assembled and hung, and our licensed electricians make the connections and install any new wall controls.

Balance and Test

We balance the blades, test every speed, the reverse switch and the light kit, then clean up and haul away the old fixture.

Many Albuquerque homes have flat roofs with very little attic space, which makes running new wiring for a fan trickier than in a house with a big attic. Sometimes our electricians can fish wires through the narrow space between the ceiling and roof; other times the best path is through a wall or along a beam in a surface raceway that's painted to blend in. We'll explain the options before we start. We also see a lot of portales and covered patios that get blazing afternoon sun and benefit from an outdoor fan, which makes an evening outside much more pleasant in June and July.

What shapes the price in Albuquerque

The cost of a fan installation depends mostly on what's in the ceiling. Replacing an old fan with a new one on a good box is the simplest job. Swapping a light for a fan may require a new rated box and brace. Installing a fan where there's no fixture at all means running new wiring and adding a wall switch, which is more work, especially in homes with flat roofs and little or no attic space to work from. High, sloped or viga ceilings add time for special mounts and ladders, and outdoor fans may need a damp-rated box. Having several fans installed in one visit saves on setup and travel. We'll tell you up front if your ceiling needs a new box or a different wiring path, so the price reflects the real job.

Neighbors often ask

Can you hang a ceiling fan where there's only a light?

Usually, yes. The main thing is the box: many older light fixture boxes aren't rated for the weight and motion of a fan. We'll check it, and if needed, install a fan-rated box with a brace secured to the framing. Our licensed electricians make the connections, and if you want the light and fan on separate switches, they can add the wiring to make that work.

Will a ceiling fan help with my swamp cooler?

Yes. Evaporative coolers push in cool, damp air, but that air needs somewhere to go and something to move it through the house. Ceiling fans in bedrooms and living areas spread the cooling more evenly and make rooms feel cooler, so you can often run the cooler on a lower setting. Just remember to keep a window cracked open in the rooms you want cooled.

Can you install a fan on my high or vaulted ceiling?

Yes. We use longer downrods and angled mounting hardware so the fan hangs at a safe and effective height, usually seven to nine feet off the floor. For very tall ceilings, we bring the right ladders or scaffolding. Remote controls or smart switches are a good idea for fans that are hard to reach.

Can you put a ceiling fan on a viga ceiling?

Yes, though it takes planning. Vigas and latillas don't leave space for a normal box, so we usually mount to the side of a viga or a support between them, using hardware rated for fans. We'll find the most discreet path for the wiring and choose a fan with the right downrod so the blades clear the beams.

Which way should my fan spin in summer and winter?

In summer, the blades should spin counterclockwise when you look up, pushing air down to create a breeze. In winter, switch it to clockwise on a low speed to pull air up and push warm air down along the walls without a draft. We'll point out the reverse switch or remote button before we leave. If your fan has a remote or a smart control, we'll set it up and make sure it reverses properly.
