Handyman in Rio Rancho, NM
Rio Rancho sits on the high mesa northwest of Albuquerque, west of the Rio Grande in Sandoval County, and it has been one of the fastest-growing cities in New Mexico for decades. It began in 1961, when the AMREP Corporation bought tens of thousands of acres and started selling lots as Rio Rancho Estates, and it incorporated in 1981. Intel opened its first plant here in 1980, and the city grew quickly around it, passing one hundred thousand residents by the 2020 census. Almost all of its housing is from the last fifty years: early ranch homes from the 1970s and 1980s in the southern part of town, then wave after wave of stucco subdivisions like Enchanted Hills, Cabezon, Loma Colorado, Mariposa and Northern Meadows, many with two stories, tile or flat roofs and builder-grade finishes. The landscape is open and sandy, with wide views of the Sandias and the Jemez Mountains, and very little to slow down the wind. That combination of fairly new houses and a harsh, exposed site shapes most of the work we do here.
Rio Rancho's daily routes run along NM 528 and Southern Boulevard, Unser Boulevard and Northern Boulevard, with US 550 leading east to Bernalillo and its Rail Runner station. The newer City Centre area holds City Hall, a UNM and CNM campus and the Santa Ana Star Center, which hosts concerts, sports and big community events, and Intel's big campus sits near the southern end of town. Neighborhoods tend to be planned, with block walls around back yards, HOAs in many subdivisions and wide streets that lead out to undeveloped mesa. On spring afternoons the wind kicks up sand across the open lots, and in summer the monsoon storms build over the Jemez and roll across the mesa with lightning, gusts and sudden downpours.

Jobs we handle a lot around Rio Rancho
Most Rio Rancho jobs are about making newer homes work better and survive the elements. Inside, that means nail pops and corner cracks, doors that drift out of alignment, TVs mounted on tall walls, closet systems and garage shelving installed, and builder-grade light fixtures, faucets and thermostats upgraded. Outside, it's wind: gates that won't latch, wood fence panels blown loose from their posts, screens and light covers torn off, and fine sand packed into roof drains, canales and weep screeds. We also add sun shades and outdoor lighting on west-facing patios, and help with seasonal cooler maintenance on homes that still rely on evaporative cooling.
Questions we hear in Rio Rancho
My house in Rio Rancho is only a few years old. Why are there cracks already?
It's very common and usually not alarming. New framing lumber shrinks as it dries in our extremely dry air, which pushes out nail and screw heads and opens hairline cracks at drywall corners and over doors. The sandy mesa soil can also settle a little in the first years, especially where irrigation or roof runoff soaks the ground next to the foundation. We fix the cosmetic damage and point out any drainage that should be redirected away from the house.
Can you mount a large TV over the fireplace in my great room?
Yes. Many Rio Rancho homes have tall great-room walls and gas fireplaces with a framed chase above them. We locate the framing inside the chase, use a mount rated for the weight and add blocking if the studs don't fall where they're needed. We'll also talk through viewing height, since a TV mounted too high over a fireplace is hard on the neck, and run cables cleanly inside the wall where it can be done safely.
Do you work with HOA rules in Rio Rancho subdivisions?
Yes. Many neighborhoods have architectural guidelines for fences, gates, exterior lights and paint colors. If your HOA needs approval for a change, we'll give you the details you need for the request, like materials and dimensions, and we'll match approved colors and styles when we repair existing fences or trim.
Sand keeps blowing under my garage door. Can you stop it?
We can cut it down a lot. The usual culprits are a worn or cracked bottom seal, a gap where the slab has settled, and weatherstripping that's dried out along the sides and top. We replace the bottom seal with one sized for the gap, add or renew the side and header weatherstrip and adjust the door so it closes evenly, which also keeps out the cold and the insects.
