Gutter Cleaning & Repair in Albuquerque, NM

Albuquerque doesn't get a lot of rain, but when it comes, it comes all at once. Summer monsoon storms can drop an inch or more in an hour, and that water needs a clear path off the roof. Many homes here have flat roofs ringed by parapets, draining through canales, scuppers or interior roof drains rather than traditional gutters, while pitched-roof ranches and newer homes use standard gutters and downspouts. Either way, spring winds fill them with sand, dust, tumbleweeds and leaves, and cottonwood trees along the river and in older neighborhoods drop leaves and cotton that pack into drains. When a canale or roof drain clogs, water ponds on the roof, finds weak spots in the coating and ends up leaking through the ceiling.

We clean gutters, canales, scuppers and roof drains by hand, scooping out packed sand and debris, then flushing them to make sure water flows freely. We check downspouts and the outlets at the bottom, reattach loose hangers and brackets, reseal leaking seams and end caps and adjust the pitch so water doesn't sit. On flat roofs, we look at the area around the canales and parapets for cracks in the coating and let you know what we see. We bag the debris, clean up any mess on the ground and send you photos of the roof drains so you know they're clear.

What this covers

  • Gutter and downspout cleaning
  • Canale and scupper clearing on flat roofs
  • Roof drain cleaning and strainer checks
  • Sand, leaf and cottonwood debris removal
  • Loose hanger and bracket reattachment
  • Leaking seam and end cap resealing
  • Downspout extensions and splash blocks
  • Photo report of drains and nearby roof coating
A note from around here: Pueblo Revival homes in Nob Hill, the foothills and High Desert drain through canales and scuppers that clog with blown sand, while homes under the cottonwoods in the North Valley, Los Ranchos and Corrales fill their gutters and roof drains with leaves and cotton every year.

How a gutter cleaning & repair visit usually goes

Inspect from Ground and Roof

We check gutters, canales, roof drains and downspouts, and look for ponding, debris and damage.

Clear the Debris

We remove sand, leaves, cotton and other debris by hand, then flush everything with water to confirm a clear path.

Repair and Reseal

We reattach loose gutters, reseal seams and canale joints and add downspout extensions or splash blocks where needed.

Clean Up and Report

We bag all debris, clean up the yard and walks and send you photos of the drains and any roof areas that need attention.

Where the water goes after it leaves the roof matters just as much as clearing the drains. A canale that empties right next to the foundation, or a downspout that dumps water against a stucco wall, can erode soil, stain and crack the stucco and, over time, lead to settling. Many Albuquerque soils are sandy and can compact or collapse when soaked repeatedly. We add splash blocks, extensions or short rock-lined channels that carry water away from the house, and some homeowners route the runoff into rain barrels or planting beds to make the most of every drop in a dry climate.

What shapes the price in Albuquerque

The cost of gutter and canale cleaning depends on the size of the home, the number of drains, the roof height and how much debris has built up. A single-story ranch with a few downspouts is a quick job. Two-story homes, steep roofs and homes with many canales or interior roof drains take longer. Heavy sand buildup after a windy spring or leaves from big cottonwoods add time. Repairs like resealing seams, rehanging gutters or adding extensions are priced separately, but it's efficient to do them during the same visit.

Neighbors often ask

When should I have my gutters and canales cleaned?

The best time is late spring, after the windy season ends and before the monsoon arrives in early July. That clears out the sand and debris that piled up from March to May. If you have cottonwoods or other large trees nearby, a second cleaning in late fall after the leaves drop is a good idea, so drains are clear for winter snow and rain.

What's a canale, and why does it matter?

A canale is the channel that carries water off a flat roof through the parapet wall, a key feature of Pueblo-style homes. When it clogs or tilts the wrong way, water backs up and ponds on the roof, which wears out the roof coating and causes leaks. Keeping canales clear and sealed is one of the most important things you can do to protect a flat-roofed home.

Can you fix my roof leak?

We clear the drains that often cause leaks, reseal small gaps around canales and scuppers and point out cracks in the roof coating near the parapets. Larger roof issues, such as widespread coating failure, membrane damage or a roof that needs recoating, are work for a roofing contractor, and we'll tell you honestly if that's what we find.

Do you clean interior roof drains on flat roofs?

Yes. Some flat roofs drain through openings in the middle of the roof rather than through canales at the edge. These drains have strainers that catch debris and can clog with sand and leaves. We clear the strainer and the drain opening and run water to confirm it flows. If the line inside the house is blocked, our licensed plumbers can clear it.

Should I put gutter guards on my house?

Guards can help in some situations, especially under trees that drop a lot of leaves. But in Albuquerque, fine sand and dust can still get through or settle on top of the guards, so they still need checking. We can install guards and talk through which type works best for your roof and trees.

Can you add a downspout or rain barrel?

Yes. We can add downspouts, extensions and diverters to send water where you want it, including rain barrels. Rainwater harvesting is popular in New Mexico, and a barrel can catch a surprising amount of water from even a short monsoon storm. We'll set it on a level, stable base and add an overflow so excess water drains away from the house.
